 '93 NAMM Ibanez Jam
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kilLE3R-mFM
I know this has been discussed already.. But I was just watching this clip earlier and when Shawn Lane starts playing his solo, I just giggle like a little girl..
He flat pwns every other guitarist there... I think it's cool that Paul was so original with his solo... Left handed with his mouth! I guess you can't really "out shred" Lane anyways...
Man I really hate that Shawn had to leave us... Talk about a guy who was just on another level... And I think this "internet age" we are in now would allow Shawn to get the credit he deserved.. I just can't say enough about the guy damnit...
RIP SHAWN LANE

This has been up, like, 3 or 4 times already, but that clip still owns!

What annoys me is Shawn shreds the FUCK out of his guitar during that clip, and it's cool because he's like one of the best guitarists that's ever lived...but...if it was some random 16 year old kid playing in his annual talent show at school and he did that EXACT same solo note-for-note, everyone here would be like "lame, where is the emoshun?!, just boring shred0rz", you can pretty much guarantee that. And then we'd all have to read 9 pages on a fucking shred vs feel argument.
Don't get me wrong, Lane's solo was IMPRESSIVE for sure but it wasn't musical and sounded like crap. Why do we praise the guys that are already famous for fretboard wanking and not all the unknown people who can do it just as well without giving the "emotion" lecture?

This is probably one of the shittiest clips I've ever heard with Shane in it. His phrasing is amazing. It takes more than 16 years experience to get something like that.

IMO, Lane's solo was very impressive and has a melodic texture that no one else had (as he again IMO has the most unique/interesting/weird phrasing and fingering out of everyone there), and that's why it's great.
I think we praise him because of his ability to compose beautiful pieces as well (plus he's a piano virtuoso ).
I just like how he's potrayed in the video, as a guitar monster who just MURDERS the best of the best in terms of technicallity. I mean, he MURDERS everybody, then commences to run them over with a SUV repeatedly.
And then he pours gasoline and lights them on fire.
That's how badly he kills everyone on guitar technical wise. And then there's that musical side to him on his solo cds.
But what if he was doing a G3 jam today. Can you imagine??

Shawn bores me, though i find his technique amazing. Also, the entire jam was a bit wanky, IMO, i've always thought the output of that kinda thing/G3 was less than the sum of its parts. if you catch my drift...

I remember when I saw that video for the first time I heard Lane's solo and was completely bored by the technique-ness of it but though "oh well, at least it ends on a nice lick..."
It took me 5 listens to figure out that was actually the start of Paul's "solo".

lol at the beginning, seems like satch about to shout SHUT THE F Up to the people hahaha because when hes trying to talk all these guitar noises everywhere... drummer and bassist got raped for sure lol..
btw lane is cool.. i cant judge his emotion and stuff, but it'll be nicer if he can cool down for a second or two.. then shred again ^_^
IMO
